Rwanda Union of the Blind Visits Musanze District to Assess Digital Accessibility for the Visually Impaired
In a decisive move to advance digital inclusion, representatives from the Rwanda Union of the Blind (RUB) visited Musanze District to evaluate and improve the accessibility of the district’s website and social media platforms for blind and visually impaired persons.
The visit forms part of a nationwide initiative launched by RUB to collaborate with local governments in making digital platforms more inclusive. The initiative was officially announced during last month’s National Policy Dialogue on Disability and Digital Inclusion, where RUB committed to working with at least two districts in each province to enhance website accessibility for blind users, ensuring they have equal access to vital information.
During their visit to Musanze, RUB representatives assessed the usability of digital platforms through the lens of visually impaired users. Key areas of focus included the integration of assistive technologies such as screen readers, keyboard navigation, and the use of alternative text for images, tools that are essential for enabling blind users to access online information independently.
“We plan to visit these districts to verify that their websites are accessible,” said Dr. Beth Nasiforo Mukarwego, Chairperson of RUB. “It’s crucial for blind individuals to have the same access to information as everyone else. We will work closely with district IT teams to achieve this.” Dr. Mukarwego made the announcement during the recent policy dialogue, which brought together Disability Mainstreaming Officers from across Rwanda, alongside leaders from RUB. The forum served as a platform to exchange best practices and strengthen commitments to inclusive digital governance.
The move has been welcomed by advocates and observers as a progressive step in Rwanda’s ongoing efforts to build a more inclusive society. By ensuring that public digital services are accessible to all, including persons with disabilities, the initiative aims to bridge the information gap and promote equal opportunities for every citizen.
