RDF 2nd Division Hosts UPDF in Friendly Football Match
In a celebrating strong military cooperation and regional solidarity, the Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) 2nd Division today hosted its counterpart from the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) 2nd Division in Musanze District for a series of joint activities, including a friendly football match, a symbolic route march and a tree-planting exercise.
The event was graced by the presence of local residents, various government officials and defence attachés from both Rwanda and Uganda countries.
The celebration began with a joint route march through the streets of Musanze, where soldiers from both forces marched side by side and were warmly received by cheering members of the public. This was followed by a collaborative tree-planting initiative in public areas, underscoring the shared commitment of the two forces to environmental conservation and sustainable development.
The highlight of the day was a spirited football match held at Ubworoherane Stadium. The match ended in a 1–1 draw during regular time and proceeded to a penalty shoot-out. The UPDF 2nd Division emerged victorious, narrowly defeating the RDF 2nd Division 8–7 on penalties. Despite the competitive nature of the match, both teams demonstrated exemplary discipline, camaraderie, and sportsmanship, the qualities that reflected the wider spirit of unity and cooperation that the event aimed to promote.
Addressing participants and attendees, the Governor of Northern Province, Mr. Maurice Mugabowagahunde, extended his appreciation to both the RDF and UPDF for their active participation. He lauded the initiative as a commendable example of peace-building and community engagement through soft diplomacy.
Speaking on behalf of the Chief of Defence Staff of the RDF, Major General Alex Kagame, the Chief of Staff of the Reserve Force emphasized the significance of the day’s events:
"The RDF and UPDF share a historic bond of friendship and cooperation, and today’s football match symbolises not only competition but also unity, trust, and the shared commitment to building a secure and resilient future for the region.”
Major General Paul Muhanguzi, Commander of the UPDF 2nd Division, echoed similar sentiments, stating: "Today we enjoy the fruits of Rwanda’s patriotic army liberation struggle, our brotherhood, and our shared purpose. We thank our presidents; H.E Paul Kagame and H.E Yoweri Kaguta Museveni; we thank the RDF for their hospitality and look forward to future engagements.”
The event served not only as a sporting encounter but also as a reaffirmation of the enduring bonds between the RDF and UPDF, anchored in shared values and a common vision for peace and stability in the region.
