Mutobo Water Treatment Plant Expansion Nears Completion, Set to Transform Water Supply in Musanze District

Gataraga – The expansion and upgrading of the Mutobo Water Treatment Plant has reached 97% completion, marking a significant milestone in efforts to improve access to safe and reliable water across Musanze District.

The first phase of the project will increase the plant's daily production capacity by 43,000 cubic metres, adding to its current output of more than 12,500 cubic metres. Upon completion, the facility will produce a total of 55,500 cubic metres of treated water per day, substantially strengthening water supply in northern region.

The upgraded infrastructure is expected to provide a sustainable and long-term solution for more than 354,000 residents living in Musanze and Burera districts, as well as selected sectors in Nyabihu and Rubavu districts.

The project is designed to address the growing demand for clean water driven by population growth, urban development, tourism, and expanding economic activities. By increasing the availability of safe drinking water, it will contribute to improved public health, better sanitation, enhanced livelihoods, and greater resilience for communities throughout the service area.

Once fully operational, the expanded Mutobo Water Treatment Plant will play a vital role in supporting Rwanda's national commitment to universal access to clean water while promoting sustainable socio-economic development across the Northern Province.
