Minister Habimana Urged Northern Province Leaders to Harness the Region’s Opportunities to Drive Development

The Minister of Local Government, Dominique Habimana, on Friday, September 26, 2025, called on leaders in the Northern Province to fully utilize the region's vast opportunities in order to bring about meaningful development and improve the lives of its citizens. He made this appeal while attending the Northern Province coordination Meeting held in Musanze District.

This meeting brought together leaders from various sectors, including government officials, security agencies, private sector actors, faith-based organizations, and elected representatives from different categories. The main objective was to assess the progress in implementing the National Strategy for Transformation (NST2) and to devise strategies for accelerating its execution.

In his address, Minister Habimana emphasized that the Northern Province has unique and abundant opportunities. He urged leaders in the region to take full advantage of these in order to bring about transformation in development and in citizens’ well-being.

Among the opportunities he highlighted were: the province’s diverse tourism attractions, fertile land, favorable climate with sufficient rainfall, and a population that is well-aligned with government programs and has a strong work ethic. He stated:

“As leaders, I urge you to join efforts to utilize these opportunities to help us achieve rapid and sustainable development.”

The Minister also called on the province’s leaders to strengthen collaboration, teamwork, and partnerships, to stay close to citizens and address their problems on time, to provide efficient and quality services, align infrastructure development with poverty alleviation programs, and to maintain security, which he described as the foundation of everything.

During the same meeting, the Governor of the Northern Province presented that the region is performing well in several sectors, including agriculture, infrastructure, social welfare, and service delivery. The Governor also outlined various measures taken by the leadership to tackle persistent challenges such as sanitation issues, stunting and malnutrition, school dropouts, security-related crimes, and others.
